Expression pedal update

@James can you give us an update please?

Is this exactly what we’ve been looking for?

Boss EV-1-WL Wireless MIDI Expression Pedal

Yes? No? Very promising?

MIDI CC has much lower resolution than what the MOD pedal would have, I believe.

No, it’s about the plans for a Control Chain MOD Expression pedal

We’ve encountered another potential manufacturing issure for one of the parts so I’m making quick adjustments this morning to send updated drawings to the manufacturer. Hopefully soon I can show you some photos of new parts

In case you were worried, the adjustments are already done

Dang, I have to say that this is probably going to go into my set up when I can snag one. I’d love to have a full range of MOD device units in my set up.

( shortening the ‘update please’ routine to 20 days )

@James : what is the current status + what is the estimated date of delivery ?

@James is currently on holiday for a week (I believe) so it may take a bit for him to see your “request”

Let me give you an update and ETA, which is as overdue as the Expression Pedal itself.

The enclosure samples have been ordered and are in the making. In parallel, we also planned all changes required on the electronic side to match the improved design.

With the new supplier, we are assuming everything is fine with the 1st sample run. So we could start procurement soon and the 1st production run could still be in Q4 (this year;). We would dimension it big enough so that every backer gets a unit from this initial batch.

We cannot rule out uncertainty as the supply of certain parts is still difficult. But it’s more likely then ever before to ship within 6 month maximum.

The reason is quite simple: We will not start any other hardware development project until the Expression Pedal is done.

When the Duo X and Dwarf projects were kicked off, there was the assumption the Expression Pedal can be pulled off in parallel. This was just not true with the ressources given. Let alone the extra challenges the pandemic brought. We learned that the hard way and I’m sorry the Expression Pedal backers have been also.

Thanks for your great patience!

A little eye candy
The prototype parts from the new manufacturer are finished and on their way to us.
Once they arrive we will do a lot of testing to make sure everything fits together as expected.
Then we can check the usability to make sure it feels nice to use. Very exciting times

I agree. I don’t want to get my hopes up, we need to see them in person but based on the photo they look a lot nicer than the stuff from the previous manufacturer

Looks great! Looking forward to having one to play with during the Christmas holidays

James - do you have an ETA on the prototypes?

The parts arrived at the office on Friday but I was at home sick (not covid). I should be back in the office on Tuesday to check it out

Hope you’re feeling much better soon!

I’m back in the office this week. Feeling mostly better. There seems to be a few bugs going around in Berlin.

I’ve been inspecting the parts today and yesterday and I am very happy with how they turned out. Much better than all of the samples from the previous supplier. It’s a huge relief.

I was waiting for some screws, bolts and potentiometers to arrive to finish the full mechanical assembly. Unfortunately the screws were delivered into our letterbox today on a day when the person with the keys is not in the office  So tomorrow I should be able to test the actual expression pedal part.

So we need to do some user testing but overall I’m really happy with the supplier. The may be some little adjustments to make but I think it will be very easy with these guys considering how good their first sample is!

Some more pedal porn… After doing a little bit of usability testing we already have some ideas for improvement which only require some holes in the enclosure to move around so no big design changes. Meanwhile @Jan is preparing the PCB so we can test the functionality

…always nice to see the pivot point back towards the heel like that!
